Floor-by-Floor Overview
FLOOR BY FLOOR
The New Children's Hospital of Illinois and OSF Saint Francis Medical Center feature some of the most advanced technology in modern healthcare. From the ground up, the new expansion was designed to enhance safety and comfort for both our patients and their families. Here are just a few of the advancements you'll find floor by floor in the new facility.
Click on each floor below to expand its details.
Since 1986, the number of patients treated in the Emergency Department at OSF Saint Francis has doubled to more than 73,000 people. That's one reason we set out to radically expand our Emergency Department. The new, custom-designed space will not only allow us to treat more patients, it'll improve their security, safety and privacy. Here are just a few of the new features:
Two Walk-In Emergency Entrances
For enhanced privacy, security and safety, we created one for adults and one just for children.
Dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department Rooms
Our new Emergency Department features rooms designed exclusively for children, including a Children's Waiting Room funded by CEFCU. This allows our caregivers who specialize in pediatrics to treat children with improved privacy, security and safety…in a child-friendly atmosphere.
Keycard Security System
Patient privacy and safety are always a top priority. To ensure the utmost security for our patients, we installed locks on all Emergency Department and family sleep rooms. Only authorized caregivers and family members you select can enter.
Specially Designed Pod System
The ED is designed around three large "pod" areas that can be opened or closed according to patient demands. Each pod has its own dedicated team of physicians and staff, along with its own medication and supply areas.
Decontamination Room
In the event of chemical spills or other disasters, this area provides six special showers to aid in quickly and safely removing contaminants from rescue workers, attending staff and patients.
Cardiac Monitoring
Every ED room is equipped to monitor cardiac conditions at all times. And each room is directly visible from the nurses' station.
55 Exam Rooms
In addition to private exam rooms, there are six crisis rooms (large enough to accommodate an entire family), two mental health rooms and two trauma rooms.
20 Surge Beds
In the event of a major disaster that might affect dozens of people, each "pod" features specially designed panels located in the corridors that can provide oxygen and suction for injured patients. These panels allow us to transform ED hallways and accomodate 20 additional emergency beds.
Private Ambulance Entrance
Technological advances are abundant in our new surgical areas, giving surgery teams every possible tool to provide instant, on-site support in surgical and cardiovascular procedures. Here are some highlights:
Centralized Cardiac Catheterization and Surgery Suites
When treating heart problems, time is everything. That's why we designed our new cardiac catheterization suites right next to the heart surgery suites. By placing them together, we gain crucial time in critical situations. And by saving time, we can save more lives.
Large Screen Surgical Monitors
Each surgical suite features large color monitors that digitally display critical data on a patient's condition, like blood pressure, heart rate and other vital signs.
Rapid Heating and Cooling Surgical Suites
Precise temperature control prevents infection after surgery. Which is why our new pediatric surgery suites are equipped with a rapid heating system that can raise the temperature to 90 degrees in ten minutes. And our heart surgery suites can drop the temperature to 60 degrees in 15 minutes. This state-of-the-art technology was designed with your safety in mind.
7 New Surgery Suites
Our new state of the art surgical area includes four heart surgery suites for both adults and children and three Pediatric Operating Rooms exclusively for children.
Four Cardiac Catheterization Labs
Each 700-square-foot lab is located next to a surgical suite, eliminating the need to transport patients to different areas of the hospital. Electronics for each lab are located outside the lab, keeping the room cooler and quieter for patients and staff.
18 Prep/Recovery Beds for Children
This is where children will be taken immediately before and after surgery. Parents are able to accompany their children to these special rooms.
Children's Play Room – Staffed with Child Life Specialists
A special play room is located right next to the children's prep/recovery area, providing a comforting place to help young patients take their minds off their procedures.
38 Prep/Recovery Beds for Adults
This is where adults will be taken before and after surgery. Family members will be able to stay with their loved ones before surgery.
Children's Waiting Area
Named in honor of the John Bearce Family, this is a special area dedicated to children and their families, with two consult rooms, a lactation room for breastfeeding moms and a stroller storage area.
Adult Waiting Area
Named in honor of RLI Corporation, the adult waiting area also includes two consult rooms and a vending area for waiting families.
Named for Dr. Theresa Falcon, the spacious first floor lobby will serve as the new main entrance to the entire medical center. Designed to be welcoming and comfortable, the lobby will greatly improve admitting processes and diagnostic services. In addition to a chapel and a gift shop, the first floor also includes:
Family Space
When a loved one is in the hospital, family members want to stay close. Which is why we designed a unique family area on the first floor. This resource center has phone and internet access, a kitchen, even laundry facilities. It's all designed to help keep families together – and comfortable – during the hospital stay.
Centralized Admitting and Diagnostic Services Areas
By bringing these together, we've made it possible for patients to have all their diagnostic services completed in one location. The laboratory, EKG, Echocardiography, Stress Testing, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine will all be located on the first floor.
8 Admitting/Registration Booths
Each one is fully enclosed for patient privacy and are staffed 24/7.
Children's waiting room with "The Egg"
Children – and their parents – will have their own specially designed waiting area that includes a feature called "The Egg." This enclosed interactive area allows children to digitally "catch planets" or "move water around" while they wait.

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment. Hospitals have to be prepared to deal with continually shifting demands and emerging technologies. That's why we designated the second floor for future development. It allows us the space to readily adapt to ever-changing healthcare needs.
Named in honor of Gerald & Helen Stephens, the third floor is dedicated to the care of very ill newborns, our smallest and sickest patients. The floor contains 60 beds that are divided into seven "neighborhoods." Six of these neighborhoods feature eight beds and one holds 12. Here are just a few of the innovations found on the third floor:
NICU Instant Alert System
Our new instant alert system gives an immediate connection between the family and caregiver. A device worn around the caregiver's neck is linked to the bedside monitor. The caregiver can be immediately contacted by the baby's family – for faster response time and more efficient communication.
Private NICU Patient Rooms with Family Space
The love parents have for their child is endless. We wanted that love to be reflected in the design of our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Which is why we offer private NICU rooms with plenty of space for the baby's family to stay and surround them with love and care around the clock.
Barcode Medication System
To ensure our patients are getting correct medication and accurate dosages, we've invested in a barcode medication system. Each patient is logged into our computer system and all medication given is meticulously tracked and logged to greatly reduce any chance of error.
In-Room Family Sleeping Areas
We understand the importance of having a loved one nearby when you're ill. Which is why all patient rooms in the new building have a sofa sleeper for a family member – so you can have a loved one nearby at all times. It's just part of our plan to create a true healing environment.
Around the Clock Visiting Hours
When you're sick is when you need your family the most, which is why we have 24/7 visiting hours. Family members can be with patients when they are needed.
Nurse Substations Outside Every Room
To ensure we're providing the greatest care and love, each patient room is directly connected to a nurses' station where our caregivers can see you at all times.
Keycard Security System
Patient privacy and safety are always a top priority. To ensure the utmost security for our patients, we installed locks on all Emergency Department and family sleep rooms. Only authorized caregivers and family members you select can enter.
Dedicated Pediatric Pharmacy
When building our new facility, we took every measure to ensure a safe and secure environment. Which is why we built a special pharmacy for our pediatric patients, staffed by pharmacists who specialize in pediatrics. This helps us ensure that adult and child medications are kept separate — minimizing the potential for dosage errors.
Six Family Sleeping Suites
Thanks in part to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois, the third floor features six family suites that include bathroom facilities for out of town families.
Cardiac Monitoring in All Rooms
Every room is equipped to monitor cardiac conditions at all times.
Family Dining
2 Lactation Rooms for Breastfeeding Moms
Three Call Rooms for Physicians
Named for William and Dr. Mary DiSomma, the fourth floor is where we care for critically sick or injured children. It houses 16 new intensive care rooms, 16 intermediate rooms and one four-bed room for children requiring long term care. Here are just some of the many other new features we designed for the floor:
Private Patient Rooms
When you're sick, sometimes all you want is your privacy. Which is why we designed all of our new patient rooms as private rooms. This way, patients can heal in the kind of environment that suits them and take time to visit with their family or even watch what they want on TV without having to worry about disturbing a roommate.
Barcode Medication System
To ensure our patients are getting correct medication and accurate dosages, we've invested in a barcode medication system. Each patient is logged into our computer system and all medication given is meticulously tracked and logged to greatly reduce any chance of error.

Located near patient elevators to allow quick access to surgery, these special beds are dedicated to our St. Jude children. Each bed includes a special air flow system designed to provide a safe environment for the care of children with compromised immune systems.
8 Beds for Congenital Heart Program Patients
Each room is designed for caring for children with congenital heart condition. To allow quick access to surgery, these rooms are also located near patient elevators.
Respiratory Therapy, X-Ray and Lab On Unit
Three Call Rooms for Physicians
The fifth floor is dedicated to treating adults with cardiac complications. With 32 private rooms, it includes 14 rooms for "step-down" – or intermediate care – for heart patients. The remainder are for intensive and critical care patients. Four of the rooms are set up as isolation rooms. Here are a few of the other modern features:
Private Patient Rooms

Teen Center
The Child Life Room is great for children, but for teens, it might not be as "cool." So we designed a special place for them, as well, giving teens a retreat to which they can escape for awhile.
